Septic service in Scottsdale
Most of Scottsdale is on city sewer. Its septic systems are mostly in the north: desert foothills custom homes, horse properties and the large lots out toward the Rio Verde Foothills.

Where septic is common around Scottsdale
Septic shows up on large-lot and rural properties in north Scottsdale and in the unincorporated Rio Verde Foothills east of the city. Many of these homes sit on an acre or more.
Don't confuse the Foothills with the Rio Verde, Tonto Verde and Trilogy communities next door. Those have sewer service from EPCOR, which bought the former Rio Verde Utilities in 2019.
To check your own house, look for a tank lid or riser in the yard, or search Maricopa County's online septic records for a permit. A home on city sewer pays a sewer charge on the Scottsdale utility bill.
Permits and home sales
Scottsdale and the Rio Verde Foothills are both in Maricopa County, so septic permits and records sit with Maricopa County Environmental Services. If you're selling, book the state's transfer inspection early in escrow so there's time to get repair quotes if the report finds a problem. The steps are on the home-sale inspections page.

- Guest houses and casitas that may share the main system or have their own. If you're adding one, have the system checked first, since more bedrooms can mean a bigger system. See installation and replacement.
- Driveways and RV parking that end up close to the leach field. Keep vehicles off it, because the weight compacts the soil the field drains into.
- Pool water. Drain or backwash a pool away from the tank and the leach field, so the extra water doesn't flood the field.
