Not sure how big your tank is? The permit on file with Maricopa County often lists it, and the contractor will see it at the first pump-out. Tank size is set by the size of the house, so larger homes usually have larger tanks.
What makes a pump-out cost more?
- Digging to a buried lid adds a charge. A riser removes that cost for every future visit.
- A tank far from where the truck can park needs a long hose run.
- An overdue tank has more buildup to remove. Angi notes heavy grease or oil buildup can add up to $500 in severe cases.
- Effluent filter cleaning or replacement and baffle repairs add $200 to $750, per Angi.
- Spring is a busy season, and an urgent same-week visit can cost more than a scheduled one.
Pumping for a home sale costs more
If you're selling, the state-required transfer inspection usually includes pumping the tank, plus the inspection itself and a written report, so the bill is higher than a routine pump-out. In Maricopa County, the buyer also pays a $60 fee to file the Notice of Transfer. See Arizona septic inspections for home sales.
How to keep the cost down
- Pump on a schedule. Routine visits cost less than urgent ones, and they protect the leach field.
- Know where your tank is. Check the county's septic records search before the visit.
- Add a riser once, so nobody has to dig again.
- Keep grease, wipes and food scraps out of the drains. They're what make a tank fill faster.
What a clear quote includes
- The tank size and whether the price changes if the tank is bigger than expected
- Whether locating and digging to the lid are included
- Whether the effluent filter is cleaned and the baffles are checked
- Disposal fees, if they're billed separately
- A written record of the service for your files

Questions people ask
Why do septic pumping quotes vary so much?
Tank size, how far the truck has to reach, whether the lid is buried, and how full the tank is all change the work involved. Ask each company what its price includes before comparing.
Is it cheaper in rural areas?
Angi notes that urban and suburban pumping tends to cost more than rural. Distance from the contractor's base can work the other way, so ask about a trip charge if you're far out.
Is pumping cheaper than fixing a leach field?
By a wide margin. A pump-out costs a few hundred dollars. Repairing or replacing a failed leach field is a much larger project that usually needs a county permit.
